Are there any exit options from government consulting, or are we pretty much pigeonholed for life?

Quit for a smaller firm along your functional capability to do commercial work and then go back to a bigger firm if you want.

Transfer to commercial? At least that’s how I did it at PwC pre-Guidehouse

I ended up switching to another firm to escape gov consulting.

yup. i used 'Accenture' as my current employer on my resume and LinkedIn to help distance myself a bit, but did keep 'us gov client' for my project experience. Focus on those skills that apply to any client, translate any gov language to the commercial world (i.e. GS15 to Directors), and be realistic about differences. I explained some of my own challenges with the client (i.e. red tape, slownes of decisions and how I worked around those) and directly addressed some shortcomings as a result (no experience with large scale direct customer research) taking time to explain how I'm prepared to learn/fill those gaps.

helpful

Why would you be pigeonholed?

I started in federal. Moved to commercial once I had built the network, now work in Corp strategy. So yes definitely possible

Plenty of ppl on my teams left for commercial industry - amazon, Facebook, Marriott, google, Samsung. The key is what type of work are you doing and is it transferable or is it government only or operational.

I was interested to go CA but scared in terms of job security, economic slowdown and a big change. Is it worth going to CA on contract basis job declining the full time opportunity in India.

Does anyone regret joining a boutique consulting firm? I signed with a startup out of college (spring 2020) whose founding partners were all partners/Sr leaders at a few T2s. Our firm is super small (dozen FTEs) but does really good work (we charge premium rates and work super cool projects). I’m just having second thoughts as exit opportunities aren’t as prevalent as I thought, the pay/benefits don’t match industry/risk of joint a startup, and I’m not getting the network of a Big4 or MBB

What would u do? 3 YOE HCOL city and I have 2 potential options:
1) move to a boutique healthcare strategy consulting firm in a similar role as I have now (client facing consulting role).. 120-130 base + 20% bonus
2) a product specialist role at Meta (FB). This told role product management, it’s analytics heavy. $107k base, 10% bonus, $30K stock.

At the end of the day, TC for both is similar. As far as exit opportunities I’m not sure what is better, so looking to get other people’s opinions.

Currently, in accenture. I have had very bad billable hours and not much achievement this fiscal year. I am worried of getting fired, so i applied for another job. Got offered may be 5% above my current pay with 5k bonus, but in lower level at Deloitte. I think working lower level will give me more opportunities to learn as i think i have lot to learn. I made decision based on my gut and accepted the offer. I have not talked to anyone on accenture side yet. What you think?
