Is being an over-40 white male in this industry considered being a minority yet?

Not for CCOs, ECDs, Managing Directors, SVPs, Presidents, CEOs, and Principals. But other than that, sure.

Actual “minority” here finds your question tone-deaf. the answer is: no.

I’m not sure if the OP was intending to start an inflamed race discussion or not. Nobody should be marginalized or rejected based on anything other than lack of skill. However, the point I took from this was there are a lot of really good people who spent their whole careers in a job with increasing responsibility and promotions only to get sidelined at 40 years old and discover that they have no options to support themself or their family because it’s suddenly not in style to hire white men over a certain age anymore. I know several guys who are kind, hard working, smart, have incredible resumes/portfolios but who also cannot find anyone to consider them for even a lower-paying job these days. If you really believe this is some form of sweet justice to make up for past wrongs of the industry, you are truly heartless.

While I appreciate your perspective and your articulate way of expressing your opinion that OP’s intent may have been a humous way of feeling unfairly, he tied it to race which is insensitive and wrong. The injustice, oppression and inequality that POC work with, live with on a daily basis, in my option is not funny and should not be desensitized or marginalized in any way. I’m sorry, but I’m Black and over 40 and for a lifetime had to navigate folks who felt this sense of privilege. Not all white people are that way, but when someone doesn’t understand, they need to be informed, I’m speaking up. That’s the only way to help with changing. It’s a teaching moment. But I honestly appreciate you considering OP’s faux par and the folks who responded appropriately to the post.

Google “white privilege” then get back to us, k?

Your ignorant and clearly insensitive question is indicative of the problem with lack of true diversity in advertising, and yes that privileged attitude so rampant in our country now. Take a step back, be an adult and think about how wrong your post comment is.

Is the “pain” of declining privilege getting too much for you yet? LOL sorry about it!

In your case, let’s hopes so. You wanna be seen as a dinosaur, keep thinking like one.

OP you might be a victim of ageism more than anything, but I doubt it. As a person of color, I think your question was in poor taste. Color shouldn’t have anything to do with it. Either you’re good at what you do or you aren’t. That kind of thinking is divisive to say the least.

like

OP, I don’t know if you were looking for these reactions but I’ll assume this question is sincere.

Ageism is very real. I feel you on that. But you have two things that render you among the least affected of older people: you are white and you are a man. If you feel the effects of ageism, perhaps it will give you your first window into being treated differently because of who you are and maybe that will make you a kinder and more aware and inclusive person. Perhaps you have already felt that for different reasons like sexuality, but I suspect not. I wish you well.

I currently work in Private (GA) Aviation & have for some time (about 12 years) I’m currently making the switch to the Department of Aviation and am unsure if I should ditch my current job (in private) and go full force with the DOA & embrace this new opportunity educationally and gather as much experience as I can or keep both jobs even though I’d be working 80hr weeks.. I love the private world but am really ready to move up. I don’t know what I should do. Any suggestions?
