I have had people call and ask me if we are hiring. I talk to them a little and give them our web address to apply at. If they have impressed me, I will make note of it and look for their resume. Sometimes they have applied, sometimes not. If I wasn't impressed on the phone, I still give them a chance and look at the resume and skill sets. Many times I still call them. I also let them know either way, whether they are moving forward or not.

This is very helpful information! Thanks for sharing it!
If you're looking for anything available, cold calls can be useful. They may have just had somebody quit and now have an opening that haven't listed yet. But if you're looking for something more specific, it's usually not very effective.
I'll add an exception though. I see your line of work - physical therapist. If you call small/medium size firms that specialize in what you do, you may come across a place that has more business than they can handle and they may be willing to add a position.

I am trying to leave this field as I don’t enjoy it. I am looking for solutions. Thanks for your insight!
In this job market? There’s no harm in it. With so many people trying to find a job and so few job openings available. Do whatever you can to make yourself stand out. I always find an impressive when people come in or call about an opportunity instead of just sending an email. It really shows initiative and that you’re not going to take the easy way out all the time.

Thats good to know! Thanks for sharing this information. It is very encouraging!
I stick with applying to whatever I see online. I don't see calling to ask doing you any harm, I just doubt it's going to be very effective.

That makes sense. Worst case its probably time lost
I don't think its a bad idea to be honest. But like others said they will likely direct you to their website. However, it does depend on what kind of jobs you are looking for.

Good to know. I am mostly concerned about it affecting my chances for getting a job I want. I fear they look at people who do this as desperate
I haven't called, but I do cold-apply through email and have had success with that in the past. You never know when a company might be thinking of hiring, and you could save yourself from competing with hundreds of other candidates by getting there first.

So there is a small chance of benefits from this action… I might as well do it
