Personally, I find it super awkward on the receiving end of these. We have to say no most of the time so it’s a tricky dynamic.
This
Usually your contact will either provide you an email or forward a thank you. It's polite. Ms. Manners and your grandmother would approve. Won't move the needle on an outcome if you aren't first choice, but to say showing attention to detail and relationship skills means nothing is also wrong.
In any case, thanking someone for their time is never "wrong". Using it as an excuse for follow-up can make it awkward.
Never do this
Probably better to email a thank you. If you don’t have their email already, you can either figure out their email address based on the company’s email format (eg, “first.last@company.com”) or ask the HR person you are working with
Not bad but it won’t make any difference to the outcome
It’s fine. We are allowed to respond. Agreed that it won’t make an influence on the result, but it’s polite and never hurts IMO.
Thank you message is good hygiene but it will never change the outcome. We do make interview decisions very quickly so it’s usually a matter of awkwardness when I get a thank you note from someone I’m about to call to turn down…
