It’s significantly easier to have something you don’t need than to need something you don’t have. Put some time aside to keep the resume updated, which also helps to write things down as they happen, and then you aren’t scrambling to remember.

Depends. I find it much easier to keep it updated as I go. That way I can send my resume if I come across something I think I’d be a good fit for and it makes it way easier whenever I am ready to move on to get motivated to apply more aggressively
You should keep it updated. Imagine being in the situation (as I was) where you're looking to change jobs for the first time in 20 years, and your resume is totally out of sync with what people are looking for today. You'd almost have to rewrite it from scratch.
