As long as you (1) want to serve and (2) commission as an officer, it could be worth it. I’m currently processing for a commission in the USMC. I work in commercial banking, total comp is $225k for myself and my wife is $210k. I’m also prior service and feel that the healthcare alone is worth it. I will also get a retirement pension at 60 and I’ll get healthcare for life for myself and my wife.
How much is the health cate
I was mbb consulting. Financially it doesn’t make sense. Reserve retirement pension is minimal unless you activate multiple times to get active duty time count up, OR somehow get points from other activities (funeral duties, training etc). Tricare reserve select is a good low cost health insurance option if you have below average family coverage from your civ employer. Keep in mind, it’s been difficult for me to find providers who take tricare, since I live far from major military bases. I’m not sure about TFL + Medicare thing, I presume a lot of the healthcare coverage and policy will change by the time I get that age 30 years from now.
(Continued) but it absolutely makes sense if you want to serve your country. I was in USMC reserve and deployed to Afghanistan, which was a life changing experience and something i am proud of. Money isn’t everything
I was ~10 years AD and 12 reserves while consulting. Retired as an O-5. Some considerations:
1. Are you prior active duty or just signing up? Big difference between going 10 and 20.
2. Are you hoping to get a retirement? It’s true cliff vesting…19 years = $0 retirement.
3. It will affect your career and/or home life. I got mobilized and deployed to AEF as a Director. Wouldn’t trade it for anything but I probably delayed making partner 2 years as a result. (But I still am very comfortable). And it was tough to balance when the kids were young. And the balance gets tougher w every “day job” promo.
Bottom line: I found it fulfilling but I had a 10 year head start. Couldn’t have ground out 20. Happy to chat if you want to DM.
