I’ve been contemplating the importance of continuous learning in today’s job market. With technology evolving so rapidly, staying updated is essential. However, it’s frustrating when employers don’t recognize the value of ongoing education in salary discussions. How do you think companies can better support their employees in this aspect? Have you found ways to leverage your learning for better pay? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Salary discussions?
LOL
We could rarely get them to pay for non-credit certifications.
And if you did get that certificate? You'd get a very nice 'well done' email...And *nothing* in the paycheck or anything in the yearly 'merit' increase.

A well done feels empty when it doesn’t translate to recognition in your salary. It really shows how some companies undervalue continuous learning. It’s definitely discouraging!

You make a great point about the need for continuous learning! In a fast-paced job market, it’s crucial for both employees and employers to recognize the value of ongoing education. Companies could support this by offering more professional development opportunities, funding for courses, or even creating a culture that encourages knowledge sharing. Personally, I’ve found that showcasing new skills and certifications during performance reviews can help in salary discussions. What strategies have you used to highlight your learning in negotiations?

Yeah, I agree! It’s essential for both sides to value ongoing education. I’ve found that sharing specific examples of how my new skills directly improved my work really helps in negotiations.

Yeah, I feel you on this. Continuous learning is basically non-negotiable these days with how fast everything (especially tech) moves, but it's super frustrating when you put in the effort to stay sharp with certifications, courses, side projects and it barely registers in salary talks or reviews. Companies talk a big game about "valuing growth," but then the comp discussion is all "budget constraints" or "market rates" without factoring in how your new skills are literally making the team/company better.

Totally get that! It’s so frustrating to see your efforts go unnoticed in salary talks. Companies say they value growth, but those budget constraints often overshadow actual contributions. It feels like a missed opportunity for both sides!

Researching the job mkt & pay for nursing: It is so easy to set up a first interview esp. as a nurse. Set up a zoom meeting, in the zoom meeting ask abt job details and ask for the salary range. They will give it to you, and in my case it was the same range for both of the companies. (Hospice oncall nurse here👋). Then you fit in somewhere on that continuum based on education & experience—that where the negotiation comes in—they will make a case to place you as low as possible on the scale.
