I get it. I take the view two ways. 1. If it is a job, they will probably leave a message. 2. If a number appears that I don't recognize, but it's outside the area codes that have been telemarketing me, I will pick those up.

Any professional and smart recruiter (corporate or etc.) will call and leave a message or send you either a text or email as they realize we have lives too even though we are unemployed / looking for work.
Have you checked your resume to make sure that it can make it through the company's AI / ATS with the right keywords / phrases? Just because you apply on a job board does not mean that 100% of them make it through as many recruiters do have to manually go to job boards and pull the applications to their ATS if they remember.
"Ghosting" also seems to be the norm, unfortunately, especially for the younger generations.
Yes, the job market and economy are bad as well as the political climate.
There are times where I will not answer unknown calls either if they are not from a local area code although there are also times that I will regardless of if it is from a collector, telemarketer, or out of state placement agency although that is also because I know how to sniff out scammers.

I think most recruiters will contact you via multiple avenues. If they call and you don’t answer, they’ll likely leave a voicemail or text so make sure your inbox has space. Usually they’ll send an email or LinkedIn message letting you know they called.
Wait that’s so valid. I do this too to be honest, but around the time I’m applying for new jobs, I do just answer. Maybe wait for them to say something first if you wanna avoid spam callers.
