I’ve been interviewing pretty consistently over the last couple weeks. What’s one interview question that instantly makes you side-eye a potential employer?

I always want to roll my eyes when asked the classic, where do I see myself in five years? It's such an overused question, and there's no good way to answer it. If I was going to be honest, I'd say I hope in five years I'm not having someone asking me weird questions in job interviews.

This is really interesting advice, and I love it! Thank you!

Any questions about high-pressure environments without context. 9/10 times, you have zero support, and they are trying to fish if you’ll be ok with that.

like

Absolutely! This is something I definitely need to start looking out for.

My biggest side-eye is:
If you found yourself in x situation at work, what would you do?
- I always respond with a question of my own: what do your policies and procedures say to do? Usually I get stammers and stutters and , "oh, okay" and moving on to the next question. However, I once had someone respond "that doesn't matter, you need to answer with what you would do, not what our policies might say." The question was clearly a setup and I wasn't going to play that game. My response to that was, "Absent a moral, ethical, or legal reason not to, I would follow the agency policies & procedures, as well as any governing case law and statutes that apply to this situation. Should any of the aforementioned exemptions apply, I would seek consultation with a trusted senior staff member or my own counsel." I got glared at for the rest of the interview.

Runners up:
What do you like to do in your spare time?
- ...why is that your business? I have found most places that ask this are the ones that then either ask you to overtax yourself at work or don't respect personal time.

We expect all employees to be good team players -- in what ways are you a good team player?
- I don't like this one for the same reason as the previous question.

The future self questions (where do you see yourself, etc). Quite frankly, I probably haven't figured it out yet myself. Also, 5 year plan in this economy?! (I actually made the economy joke once in an interview where the tone was right, and the lead interviewer choked on their water from laughing so hard. I got the job)

like

Oh wow, I like that you held your ground with that first question!
I agree with you about the personal time & team player questions. I’m always stumped as well when it comes to the 5 year plan question, but I like your answer😂

COO’s & previous SR. account executives…

I made it to regional manager for a franchise by age 22. Ran a successful financial practice & sold by the age of 33. Took 2 years off and built a health & wellness coaching platform for my wife (medical provider). Then, the last 2.5 yrs, have been a top producer in Saas sales as a senior account executive. I’ve been told I would make a great COO someday and I’m ready to take the next step into leadership. Who/what should I be targeting next?

So I recently left a really fun job where I was ridiculously underpaid for a very very boring job that gave me a pretty big pay rise. I thought I could push through how boring it is but nah, not really. Happy I made this choice because it’s a big client but not sure I can do it for long. How long would you give it before quitting? I’m really trying to make the switch to experiential/PR so any help/lead on agencies is appreciated 😶

Hi! I'm currently interviewing (3/6 interviews so far) for for an appeals manager role for DME. The job entails not only to bill for dme (cms 1500) but also to follow up on any denials or appeals, amongst other administrative duties. My questions are is it typical to have 1 person doing both the billing and denials within a new vertical for all ins.? How difficult is billing for dme as I only have experience in gyn onc and lactation billing? What's a fair salary? I have 8+ yoe in rcm, no certs.

I would like to transfer my career to Healthcare Data Analytics. I’m gaining my data analytics certification by the ending of November. I’ve also worked and still currently working for great healthcare company’s. I also have lots of great healthcare data experience. My only concern is no degree. What can I say to recruiters that will WOW them or replace the fact I have no degree because that’s what most of these company’s require.

I just accepted an offer in writing. The new job will start the background check next which I’ve been told it may take a while to complete. My start date at the new job isn’t until 2023 so there is some time for me to turn in my notice. I don’t anticipate any hiccups in the background check but is it wise to wait until the background check is complete before turning in my notice?

Hello there! I currently work in billing at a medical office. I got my Bachelors in Psychology a few years ago but I couldn’t find a position that seemed like a good option for me that was well paying and fulfilling. I tried working as a tech at an Applied Behavior Analysis clinic but it wasn’t a good fit. I’m hesitant to try case management or social work because I worry I won’t like it but I want to use my degree in Psychology. Does anyone have any ideas for me?

So I say this with complete humility and an understanding that this is a fortunate-ish situation to be in. I’m in a position where I am tied to nothing, I have no children, spouse, or house. My job, which I’ve loved until some recent significant leadership changes, is sucking the life out of me and I think it may be time for a change. Because I am able to “pick up and go” I’m open to opportunities and locations. I’ve never worked with a recruiter but was hoping I could get some recommendations!
