I’ve been looking at senior roles lately and the pay doesn’t seem to match the level of risk we take on. Between the long hours and the liability if something goes wrong, I’m starting to wonder if the math even adds up anymore. Do you feel like we’re actually getting a fair deal for the responsibility we carry, or is the industry just underpaying us?

Up to you if you think the long hours are worth it....at this stage of your career, there's certainly an argument that the long hours are an investment in your future (though I personally still wouldn't work big 4 hours). As far as risk, as long as you don't lie about anything you're doing (say you vouched 25 invoices but didn't actually look at them/made up the documentation), you really don't have much risk as a senior. We don't actually expect that seniors know very much in the big picture. Your managers and partners are responsible for all your work and for making sure the audit standards are met.

Anyone else just sitting around waiting for the ax to drop? I'm a soon to be 2nd year corporate associate who has seen work completely dry up. My utilization held pretty steady around 50% immediately after shutdown, but August was below 15 billables with no appreciable work in the pipeline. Aside from letting people know I'm available and doing pro-bono/CLE, it's starting to feel like a serious "covidcation" leading to termination.

H-1B question. Does anyone know if there is any issue with requesting 1098 from an educational institution if we have spent on self education while working full-time on H-1B? I incurred some expenses last year and if having a 1098 will help with tax. Thanks much!
