Let's just say the math doesn't add up, but we aren't the only ones in that shape. Everyone is struggling, except those who can live off the interest from the money they inherited from their parents and grandparents who actually earned that money. Before you throw in the towel for the greener fields outside of the schoolhouse, check to see what the average household income is in your community. If that doesn't sound fair, just look at what the average pay is for a person with a 4-year college degree. When you are comparing those salaries, remember that our total salary reflects about 10 months -- with a month of holidays included -- while those others are working 12 months with maybe two weeks of vacation and a week or so of paid holidays sprinkled in. I was committee chairman for a recent sales tax campaign to fund a revamped salary schedule for teachers. It got thumped like a kettle drum. Many people I spoke to soliciting their support told me that they are tired of teachers always complaining about being paid so little when they are making $20,000 or more a year with 60 work days off during the year while they live paycheck to paycheck for 12 months. Be grateful for what you've got. If you can find a higher-paying position in another profession, good luck -- but say goodbye to your summer job or extended vacation.

I agree right now the only good thing is knowing that summer break is coming.
We're supposed to live carefully, unfortunately, with a teacher's check. Try to adjust your bills, and see if you're up to working during the summer months or try tutoring online or in person.
Same. I’ve been an elementary school teacher for 15 years, and I used to think I’d stick with it until retirement. But now, I find myself on job boards, just looking, because the financial pressure is crushing. I have no dependents, no fancy expenses, and yet I feel like I’m always one unexpected car repair away from real trouble. It’s so demoralizing to love your job but not be able to live off it.

I agree. I'm struggling with the thought of my students loans kicking in
I knew going into education that I wasn’t gonna make a lot of money and it’s true I haven’t, but I was having a little passable life but over the past year and really the past couple of months Inflation and cost of living is making being a teacher on affordable more than it was before I don’t know how anybody is getting by right now.

I agree the scraping by, and add the behavior of students and staff -it's not hardly worth it.
I recently bought a house and got married and we are feeling the pressure. Especially because medical bills are so high even with insurance.
