Paraphrasing Mark Cuban (I believe) said, "do what you're good at so you have money to do what you love". I heard some stat that Indiana Univ has 50 trumpet majors. That's one school! Those kids may love the trumpet but most won't be doing it professionally when they get out.
Plenty of side gig hustles with photography from selling prints on Etsy, local sports/school photographer, stock photos, etc..

For sure, a lot opportunity out there
It is still just extra income right now. I wouldn’t mind making it my full-time, though. Just trying to figure out at what point I’d be comfortable to officially make the change.

Well said. That’s the perfect way of describing it!
I would like to turn what I'm doing on the side into an actual career at some point. Jumping away from the stability of my "real" job just wouldn't work for now. I've gone through episodes in freelancing where I was waiting to be paid, or things got delayed, or other disruptions came along. Things worked out, but if I hadn't had a steady paycheck coming in I would have been in some real jams.

I feel ya. That’s why I haven’t made the jump yet but it’s a goal of mine
Mine is still firmly a side hustle for now, but I'm hoping to change that in the next 6-12 months. There's a lot that goes into scaling it and I'm trying to be realistic. With that said, being my own boss on the side and seeing this thing start to take off has convinced me that it's 100% what I want to do long term. I just need to keep my real job for a while longer to build up my savings to the point I'm comfortable taking the plunge and going full time.

That’s awesome to hear that you’ve found something you’re passionate about and want to do it long term.
I pivoted out of the hell hole cubicle into commercial photography. Worked in post-production for a commercial studio and eventually began freelancing full-time during the pandemic remote WFH boom. My specific niche was resilient even til now.
Part of me says, “GO BALLS DEEP! YOLO!” The other part of me needs to emphasize that the market is saturated.
I work with a lot of photographers and even some of the most established have struggled.
Build a strong portfolio. Shadow local photographers. Focus on the business side of things. Finding a mentor in photography was paramount in my progression.
Personally, I believe if you’re passionate, disciplined, and motivated, you’ll eventually find your place.
If your side hustle starts eating up time and bandwidth at your day job then maybe then is the time to consider. If you’re truly scared, just build incrementally until it feels right.
