Two years ago, I learned that neither agencies nor clients wanted to hire a 50-something white guy to run their creative. But they were each delighted to hire an agency owned by a 50-something white guy. It’s time OP.
This is not a complaint on behalf of 50-something white guys. We’ve had a great run. I know it and am grateful.
No apologies necessary! I was relating lamentfully, not chastising.
Yes. Had I known this career had 20 year shelf life, I would have done something else.
Maybe it’s time for you to found your own shop and to create your own opportunities.
Having the same issue. After many years of freelancing successfully after many years of winning awards at top shops, the phone just stopped ringing. I have to reach out 10x more than I used to and when I do, I suddenly get less and less responses from people I’ve had relationships with for years. I’m trying to figure out is it me specifically or just how it is for everyone, but I wouldn’t know because freelance in a remote world is like living on an island. I see people getting hired and I think ‘my book runs circles around theirs, so what gives?’ Not sure where this goes from here.
Yes
There’s 101 candidates for every job out there as the model is shrinking. Also, if you’re looking outside of healthcare, sadly, there’s always been a snobbery that health advertising is its own thing, that plus age will be a wild mountain to try and traverse. Just look to where your strengths lie and really sweat your personal contacts for intros. Replying on LinkedIn is largely a fruitless activity.
Absolutely. At this stage in my career and life I would have thought I could go anywhere and do anything. It’s just not how it is though, partially I do think my age has to do with it, but a lot of other factors are at play too right now. Not really sure what the rest of my career is going to look like.
Let’s all start an agency together?
Maybe it's time for 50 over 50? BTW ©2024 SC on that. HA!
