Yet, you used it in your vent post.
The way she used it is the correct way HRM1. Others use it as a filler word.
Trust HR to pull us up on this!
I have a coworker who does voice memos on slack instead of typing out messages and every other word is “Um” or “like”. Want to jump off a bridge every time a new message comes in. Of all people to use voice memos, this person ain’t it.
I work with someone who is a senior leader. She says “Ya Know” after every statement 🙃🙃🙃
I know someone who does that too. You know, it is really annoying
Agreed! I’m going to respond with “totally!” And see if they realize who idiotic they sound
I sent out a post about this a few months back and got all kinds of grief about it!
I 100% agree. They sound uneducated. Stop with the filler words!
lol the small petty things that bother people nowadays. There are much worse things than this
Professionalism is pretty subjective and I think making everyone adhere to some subjective rules is not inclusive. I understand why this might peeve someone and I do it more than I would like but it’s a habit ingrained in many of us. I’m not typing like 10 times in every email and you still understand what I’m trying to say when I use it verbally. For me I’m not gonna dock or add points for it, it’s just how some ppl are
Like is the new um
Yes. I wonder where and when this started? I wonder if this is the evolution of California English, perpetuated by reality television? Just a shot in the dark.
I agree - I am bilingual and I am cautious when I catch myself doing it and I don’t like it and always pause not to use it . Just think of better phrasing. It is disgrace to English language ( American and British I think has the same problem) :D and yes - I think it shows how not well spoken the person is or poor manners - no judgement- but definitely something that can be easily avoided, but unfortunately it is not so important these days what it looks like . But I rarely meet people speaking like this or surrounded by it haha lucky me .. I would got nuts
I thought only kids and teenagers speak like this.
If an adult is doing this, maybe their brain speed is slower than they are speaking, so using ‘like’ buys them some time?
