Just curious: What’s the typical compensation range for a Partner/Principal with deep expertise in AI—someone who has successfully led transformation initiatives and knows how to sell the work?

To clarify: I’m referring to true AI experts—those who have been in the trenches, built AI products / solutions and delivered real impact, not the “fly-by-night” crowd.

Genuinely curious to hear insights from those in the know.

As someone with a degree in the field from a top 5 CS program, whose name is on 3 AI-related patents going back a decade, I can say no client and most definitely not recruiter even remotely cares or knows the difference.

In consulting, with a few exceptions, most AI leaders were doing supply chain or ERP or org design or some other unrelated field before they became AI leaders. A few Coursera classes and a press release later, they are doing keynotes at conferences.

As for clients, they stop reading the bio after they see the words AI.

This is why all the data is showing that most AI projects fail and clients are complaining about not seeing financial benefits of AI.

When I got recruited for my role, 2 of the 3 other finalists had absolutely zero AI experience and my experience had almost nothing to do with why I got selected.

Most fail because they are academic fluff vs practical implementations

No idea yet. I’m in the pipeline at several firms for this. I’m a patent pending co-inventor (with an MIT professor) of several novel approaches to AI, so I’m not someone making up AI du jour.

Bro. You can look forward to being undermined by homegrown generalist partners who will be super intimidated by you

I’m yet to meet the deep AI people at KPMG or any consulting firm…

Seriously, though, even those of us using LLMs in many client-facing deployments are just focused on billing and revenue!

K1, so true. The characteristics that lead to Partner do not overlap well with the deep, leading technical expertise. Said as someone that did their Thesis work in AI/NN and bagged it to become a specialist in convincing clients I am a specialist in whatever they need. Turns out while I live AI, I’m better compensated as a talker.

I was with an old friend and client today, who has about 20B under management (PE) and he asked me for “real AI experts who can work w his portfolio companies”. He said he would pay that person “Eye popping amounts of money…like an MLB pitching contract…if they really knew their shit”

If you can go into portfolio companies and actually help them transition I would ask for $1m base, a slice of upside, board positions, and partner carry.

Can I send you my CV?

Genuine question: what do your clients buy? Is it actual advanced AI applications that require specific developments? Or more “off the shelf” AI tools implementation?
Trying to gauge the maturity of clients vs what firms can actually do / sell

It is a combination. Out of the box ai tools can only do so much. But build on and using it. Incl data integrations and app logic

All partners have deep diffeeent types of SME. I would start with whatever the existing / normal bands are.

The same % of profits you bring in as any other Partner

What’s your worst experience with a senior? (As an associate)

Hello, I am a junior business administrator working in advisory operations. I have been with the company for 6 months, and was employed along with 2 other colleagues. I have picked the job up really fast and am even doing some “extra curricula’s” I really love my job. However I have recently found out I am being paid the same as an apprentice on my team, I usually do at 3 x the work he does whilst also doing my Cert CII. It has really disheartened me and I feel I should be earning more money

For those that transferred internally from Audit —-> TAS, how did you talk to your partner about making the move? Just talked to mine and he seemed pretty upset. Our business is understaffed and I am considered a “high” performer. Just wondering if this should have been generally expected/your experiences were the same.
