It makes sense in the converse, too. I don’t need to love a teacher in order to learn from them.
That said, I think it’s easier to learn/teach if you have a good relationship with the other party. I think a good relationship means both individuals get more out of their interactions. I think the same is true of medical professionals and any other profession that works one-on-one with people. But “necessary” is a step too far.
I actively try to build relationships with students and sincerely care about them as not only as students, but as people. With that being said, not every student responds well to this, for various reasons. But I believe that when they see people trying to help them, even if they don’t “like” that person, they can still make progress with their skills. But let’s be honest: every year there are a few students we’re all glad to see walk out the door. That doesn’t mean we’re hoping they fail or anything like that.
I have students who I connected with who are still in my life and now have children they want me to have influence on. I am thankful for those relationships, but I also have sadness for the students I never could reach.
Yes. I agree.
Honestly, I never really thought about it from this point of view. I love my job, but as hard as I try, it's not always easy to love that student who is constantly giving me hate and disrespect and always bringing chaos to my classroom!
It’s 100% correct. I started saying “I’m in this relationship too. What about how I feel?” When students, admin, parents and everyone that tries to guilt me about my reaction to situations. I’m allowed to get angry and defend myself when I am being attacked. I’m tired of being a punching bag.
