Ladies, I’m a first year income partner and my husband just got a job across the country in a city that my firm doesn’t have an office in. Our relationship is rocky (I moved for him once before and have a lot of resentment from that). Would it be career suicide to switch firms at this point in my career? The new location is a small legal market with very few options and I don’t have a book of business. Thank you!

Why does he keep applying for jobs in cities you don’t want to move to?

This. Unless he’s been in medical training I can’t imagine these moves he’s planning are necessary.

If you don’t want to move, don’t move. He can decide whether he’s going or not based on that knowledge. Happy and divorced is better than miserable and married.

I mean even if it’s not career suicide it sounds like it will be a relationship poison. Doing the same thing that has already harmed the relationship seems like a bad idea

Not career suicide to move firms or cities but the new city doesn’t sound like a good fit if the legal market is small. Can you stay with your current firm and work remotely from there,
Maybe visiting current firm one week a month or something like that?

I would not give up that job specifically in the first year and without a book even if you could find an equivalent in the new location. That is a two/three years wait and build book situation.

What were your discussions about him applying or considering this job? Had you guys previously talked about this potential move? I’m sorry you’re in this situation. I empathize. My partner/fiance is an expat and may have to move for his job to stay in the country. I have a lot of feelings about that and having settled in a place and we’ve been talking about boundaries for me or either of us really to ever move for the other our entire relationship. Even then it’s been hard. So my only advice is to keep talking and/or remind him of what you guys have been talking about or agreed to. Good luck.

Seems manipulative to me. As soon as you finally "make it" to partner he gets a job in a place that will make it hard for you to continue your upward trajectory. He wants to keep you down, rather than celebrating you and finding a job in a place that works for both of you. Some men do this - they try and take away the small victories from their partners. If it was a move you were excited about that would be different (not all husbands who get jobs in small cities across the country are manipulative a holes) but he either doesn't care about you or is actively trying to hurt you, but in a way where he looks like a good guy. Nope! Get that divorce, girl.

Does anyone have advice on transitioning from insurance to another industry? I am Vice President of a small commercial brokerage- basically I do everything except write the checks. I want to move to a more structured corporate role in marketing or strategy somewhere like American Express or JP Morgan. Any thoughts? Anyone successfully pivoted? I can’t even get an interview outside of the insurance industry. I have 2.5 years experience in insurance, before that I was in restaurant management.

Hey everyone! This is my first time posting but I thought I’d try to ask, I received a request from a recruiter to interview for a new insurance company I’ve never heard of: Branch. Looked it up and it seems to be a new “Techsurance” company working with both home and auto policies. Does anyone have any information they could share about this company? Thank you!
