Laid off
After 8 years of smooth sailing in the industry I unfortunately have been to the daunting meeting with CTO and HR. The timing was really surprising as the CTO suggested that I lead a new project with a partner of ours two days ago. But today, they canceled all my meetings and kicked me off.
The shock was real, I obviously asked if it was performance based but they said no, you were great, we just went by seniority in the company.
I’ll bounce back but it is gut wrenching

I’m sorry you had to go through this SSE. It really adds to the shock when they operate as business as usual until it happens and I really think this has fundamentally changed the amount of effort I put into my job..

It's tough to face unexpected layoffs, especially after years of dedication. Focusing on your strengths and experiences can help during the job search. Surrounding yourself with a supportive network can also make a big difference.

From what I understand, ethics is separate from legal. Legal violations have consequences, ethical violations don’t. What’s the point of ethics if there are no consequences? Sure when it’s convenient to be ethnical, everyone will be. It only matters when it’s not convenient. So should there be ethics set up with consequences like loss of job that applies evenly for everyone in the company including the CEO? Should their be financial consequences set up for smaller violations?

How far do you require depts be with negotiating commercial contract terms before your legal review? I’m talking routine low value and risk contracts (e.g., vendor services), where Legal terms won’t kill the deal. My clients blindly forward contracts. I say “are you sure this term is ok?” And often get “no.” They’re surprised because they never read them. Checking the temp to see what others experience, what might be normal. I feel contract training in my clients’ future...

Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.

Also posted over in tech bowl. Looking for advice on whether pursue a CS degree. I’m an older guy shifting to SWE. I finished bootcamp last May & about to start my first jr role at Oracle OCI. Late 30’s with a couple of kids. Is it worth it for me to seek a CS degree at this time/soonish? I’m not afraid of the extra work, and would go part time. Wondering if the eventual payoff would worth the effort. Will I level up quicker? Employer has partial tuition reimb.

Hi all - just joining and looking for some guidance! I am currently in an IT internship position (making pretty solid money considering) and following this summer I will stay on part time during my senior year (discussing a full-time job offer after already). Does anyone have any advice for a junior C++ engineer. Or do companies generally don't hire a specific language. You just have to take on whatever code work is available. Are you specifically hired for a particular tech in your company? Or most of the time you just end up not doing it at all?

I currently work as a Contracted Software Engineer and I’m set to finish my contracted time at the end of October. To stay ahead of game I started to move forward in the interview process with another opportunity as an Application Software Programmer and just received notification that I got the position. I definitely could use the extra paycheck to help out with my financial obligations. Just wanted to see if anyone has done this before.

Serious question from a happy software engineer, what do you all love about your work/actually enjoy doing during working hours?

I'll start; I'm privileged enough to have been given the opportunity to work and learn deeply on Linux and Kubernetes, and I get to tinker and play with them all day. Problem solving with them is a "fun" part of my job.

Of course most things aren't roses and sunshine, but I'd love to hear the positive parts of what you are doing, or what you like to do at work.
