I would have added up everything in the package from salary to bonus to medical benefits, PTO, etc and compared it to my current package at the time to see what the percentage of total increases it gave vs the non tangibles like work life balance, career pathing, etc.

Exactly, total comp tells the real story. I’ve seen offers with a 10% salary bump but 20% drop in overall value after factoring PTO and healthcare. How are you practically assigning value to intangibles like growth or WLB when comparing offers?
When I was young I knew nothing about negotiating, and I was generally happy just to get in the door. Looking back I wish I'd been more strategic about that. I also didn't place much importance on benefits, and I've learned to be much more attentive to that.

Thank you . That’s a common early tradeoff, getting in vs getting it right. Benefits alone can shift total comp by 15–25% depending on coverage and match. At what point in your career did you start weighting benefits equally with base?
Looking at all the numbers, not just salary. Benefits, PTO, 401k match etc. all adds up in a major way.

Agreed, the gap between base and true value can be bigger than people expect. I’ve seen benefits and retirement match add 20–30% on top of base when fully optimized. When you break it down, which component has consistently been the most undervalued in your experience? Thank you
When the company gave me working notice, and then decided the next morning they needed me. I would have asked for a retention bonus and a salary increase.
Aside from that I’ve always negotiated - ALWAYS get as much as you can up front, that’s where you make the biggest compensation gains.
