Maternity Leave

I work for a mid tier London law firm and am currently on maternity leave returning within the next couple of months.

My strong preference would be to work on a part time basis however, I suspect that might not wash as a corporate lawyer.

I'm considering working a 5 day week (for client continuity of service) but with shorter hours so I can still pick my baby up from nursery. I would be paid for 4 days as a result.

Has anyone else tried this?

What works for you guys?

Sometimes it works well given the team—e.g., not always enough hours available for a full-time person, so the firm saves money by having someone who chooses to be full time. Usually, however, I feel like law firms ideally want as many hours as possible out of each lawyer. But, they’re absolutely willing to do it to retain good people.

My firm offered me to do this when I had my first child 6 years ago. If you are a good attorney and they value you, they’ll do it. I know other big law firms that do this as well.

I'm so grateful for your response here - how did you find it worked in practice?

Mid tier law firms tend to be more flexi. I know some do 4 days a week quite happily but it depends on the team too. I’d just ask and see what other people are doing.

Thanks for this; it all helps me put together a case for this model of working!

I recently took a job with a top tier investment manager, which is a step up in title and responsibilities. I went through the typical “notice” conversations with my current employer. My boss, who was a significant supporter and mentor of me during my time at my current firm, told me that he doesn’t think my new firm is “long term” for me. Anyone ever get something like this before? It threw me off because I was hoping for his support, understanding that it’s tough for him temporarily
