I never use them and always click no when asked to confirm that I’ve read or received an email. So, just this once, your husband is right!
I see them as rude/annoying. If they come from most people, I cancel them out so they don't send a receipt anyway. If I get one from a client that matters, I allow the receipt to go back because I have to keep clients happy even if I'm annoyed. If I got them from someone junior to me, I would feel like that person was micromanaging me and overstepping boundaries.

He’s right. It’s passive aggressive. IMHO.
I’ve always been super annoyed when people sent them to me 😂 and never send them to anyone myself, but I wouldn’t go so far as to call them rude. May be a company by company norm.
