Here’s how I’d reply to my manager in that situation while keeping it professional but direct, showing appreciation while gently pushing for clarity without sounding entitled: “Thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate you taking the time to talk about this. When you say my comp is strong for my level, I’m curious what that’s benchmarked against. Is it market data for similar roles, internal comp at the company, team budget, or something else? It’d help me understand the bigger picture and where I stand.”
Why this works: Starts with gratitude so it doesn’t feel confrontational.
Uses “I’m curious” instead of “I demand to know” to keep the tone collaborative.
Lists the possible bases (market, internal, budget) without accusing anyone of “whims”. It shows you’re thinking reasonably.
Ends with a positive reason for asking (understand the bigger picture), which makes it harder to brush off.
Yikes, that seems like a red flag to me. When was the last time you got a raise? It might be time to start looking for something new.
