Yep has seen in this in the past. PIP normally is just a formality to kick someone out.
I’ve done PIP too on someone. He’s not getting any better. HR said as long as I keep my records, I should be able to kick him out because he doesnt have to agree on my PIP record. He left before the PIP completed (resigned).
My partner has also been put in a PIP. He got kicked out within 5 months.
It depends on the company culture around PIPs. If they can meet the targets in the PIP they can’t terminate (or at least shouldn’t, if State is “At-will” it’s more of a risk).
How long is the PIP? If it’s only 30 days, I’d have your partner actively look for other employment ASAP while focusing on trying to improve speed to argue at the end of the PIP there was improvement and potentially get an extension or keep employment
