I don’t know why you’d have to reach out at all. I think it’s just assumed that a former manager would be a reference. Legally, they can’t say that they had friction with you. They can only say that you’re eligible to be rehired or not. Point blank.
Reach out. The worst they can say is no. If they do refuse to be a reference for you, do you have another manager or a coworker you can ask?
I would reach out and ask if they would mind being a reference. You'd be surprised how often people's ego can rewrite history and they probably feel special that you want their good opinion. I would appeal to that ego during my request.
Conversation Starter
Since they’re the ones that worked with you most recently, they should be professional enough to put their feelings aside. But reach out to them first as a heads up.
