What’s the best way to turn down a 2nd interview? During the 1st interview, I learned that the compensation for the role is not within the range that I am looking for and requires 400 more billable hours a year than what I bill now. I’d basically be laterally for my current salary just to bill 400 more hours. I also wasn’t aware that the local office was strictly ID. Firm website advertises lots of practice areas. Any advice? I have to fill out a background check form for a position and it asks if I've ever been discharged from a job. Does getting "the talk" --i.e. being told your future isn't at the firm as a senior associate--count as being discharged? Any thoughts are much appreciated!

I am a new associate currently watching a named partner “quiet fire” but not so quiet a paralegal. He has been really nasty to her, demoralizing, degrading and any other word that fits. And I’m struggling to not speak up because I feel so conflicted. I don’t want to make things worse for her but do want him to know I see how he’s treating her.

If you are counsel how much more flexibility do you have than partners / associates?

What do you do to get yourself comfortable saying something doesn’t exist in an agreement or in case law? When i get questions like this (Ex. Does this contract have XYZ-type language?) I usually figure out the answer pretty quickly…but then I spend a ton of time trying to prove myself wrong. I got burned on a question like this as a 2nd yr, so I think I’m just hyper aware of the risk. I’ve been told I need to get “more efficient” though, so I’m trying to work on this. Any suggestions?

I am a lawyer (based in the UK) and have been practising for 15+ years (financial services/banking). I love being a lawyer but I would also love to do something more creative or more independent. What’s a typical bonus range for an ID mid-sized firm in the mid-Atlantic? It’s my first year with the firm and it’s significantly lower than my previous firms.
