Definitely make up an elaborate story about your brother in Australia needing medical care and double down when the firm provided you with support
Like Lt Dan facing the storm in Forest Gump
If only he wasn't on a boat named after the greatest villain in cinematic history
Make sure your offer is firmly accepted and done deal before leaving.
And if you do - just let them know that it’s nothing personal (better money, etc). Not sure if I’d necessarily say better brand unless you’re T2 going to T1, but if you’re moving within the same tier firms - focus on other things and don’t say better brand unless you’re willing to burn some bridges.
Most firms if they know you’re going to a competitor firm will cut you off instantly anyways, so there won’t be much negotiation if any - unless you actually want to stay. In which case you should lead with that and say you received another offer thats very attractive and can the current firm match it (comp-wise).
Thank you. I’m speaking with an attorney this week and also have notified prospect employer that I’d like to have a light review with Legal to ring fence clients.
As for non-compete, it’s specific to working with clients that I had a “material” impact with. I’ve been here less than a month so that’s a very small list, if we were to count having knowledge of what we are doing in select accounts.
This is why I want to leave within a month to limit risk and client exposure.
Of course, I will not be soliciting any clients or people from the current firm.
Do what’s best for you and your family. If they were going to fire you they wouldn’t bat an eye.
