One of the most common calls I get is about “being charged twice.” It usually happens with hotel purchases, first there’s the authorization hold, then the actual payment. That first hold always drops off in 3–5 business days, but no matter how many times I explain it, people are convinced we’ve double-charged them.

Makes me wonder how many other people see this and panic before even calling in!!

How are people not aware of this by now? It's kind of similar to how gas stations will place a hold on your card (usually a $1) if you pay at the pump, then update the charge later. Everyone should know it, but apparently a lot don't.

Exactly! It’s just like gas station holds, but so many people still don’t get it 🤷‍♀️.

If people don't accept your explanation that's just wrong. In fairness, however, I can see how they might get alarmed over that. I've looked at my banking app at times and it looked like I was charged wrongly and then I realize that'll be gone in a day or two. When you first see it, however, it can make you nervous.

“True, it does look sketchy at first on your banking app until it clears.”

I was recently the buyer in this situation! I bought something online and noticed that they had withdrew the amount of money on the day I purchased it, but then also withdrew the same amount on the day they shipped it and then refunded that and I was so so confused. I ended up emailing them kind of annoyed and they had to explain it to me. Clearly, I don't work in ecommerce ha ha

Yup, I’ve had that happen too, looks like a double charge until one of them drops off

Back when I was getting started in the food world, I worked flipping burgers at In-n-Out. A man came in and said the burgers he had gotten weren’t right. He dumped the food on the counter and then he started throwing them back behind the counter. We gave him a refund and then his demeanor completely changed. He was calmer and he told us to have a great day as he left us to clean up the mess he made.
