Not sure you’ll get a lot of traction in a bowl about salaries but I had the same issue as you.
People love talking about themselves/what they know, I usually ask “what were you up to this weekend/yesterday/earlier today?” and ask follow up questions on their answers.
Makes you more warm and liked around the office than talking news, weather and traffic.
Bonus point if you remember ppls kids and pets names and ask about them when you see them next.

I think having a few go to questions you can always someone will make it much easier to start conversations. For example "how was your weekend?" or "what are your plans after work?"
Be yourself and talk about the generic stuff that you really know about. Weather, sports, cars etc. you will find common ground with likeminded folks. With others it will have be formal.
