I think about this a lot. I'm relatively new in my career and my salary feels like a breath of fresh air. I never thought I would be able to make this much money, especially not this early in my career. While my colleagues do nothing but complain about their take-home pay and act like they can't even survive on six figures. I think a big part of it is a lack of perspective about where they came from.
Contentment is highly related to gratitude and expectations. My starting salary (many years ago) was $40K. I knew that my dad's annual income as a blue-collar worker was around $57K. I couldn't believe how much money I was being paid when I effectively knew nothing...and he's a master of his trade. My life priorities have never been to make the most money possible...I want to be paid fairly, but I also want to work with good people, I want flexibility and time with my kids. And I don't feel like anyone owes me anything. When people are so focused on the number, they feel cheated every time they hear of someone making more than them instead of considering their whole situation.
