I was the same way when this happened! Get yourself some well-made, dark wash jeans, great fitting button downs, solid loafers or flats, a solid pair of boots and a great warm coat. These are a foundation that will take you through years, while things like sweaters and cardigans and accessories will always go in and out of style.
Congratulations. How exciting. I would use pinterest and create boards to help you discover and catalog looks you like which can help you then find the stores you want to shop with. You can use those boards at stores to have the folks working there help you create the looks. (or you can even use them with stitchfix.com stylist. Google Capsule wardrobe and invest in staples. For work, I personally love Madewell, Anthropologie, Banana Republic and White House Black Market. Good luck, have fun!
Rising Star
Is there a Nordstrom near you? The sales associates are quite good and can help identify well-made, well-fitting pieces across many brands and styles. Going in for a consultation and telling them you’re aiming to build a strong capsule wardrobe as a starting point would set you up with a fantastic base!
Bring pictures of looks you like in magazines so they get a sense of your style
First off, CONGRATS!! Theory and Vince are high-end, minimalistic, classic brands. Timeless pieces you need are a good, classic coat (like a pea coat or trench) - look at Burberry, Club Monaco, Calvin Klein. A good pair of boots - Franco Sarto, Vince Camuto, Dolce Vita, Frye, Steve Madden, Blondo, Sam Edelman. A good pair of heels - most of the brands above, or for a luxury pair try Jimmy Choo, Christian Louboutin, Manolo Blahnik. Good jeans that fit well - get them tailored if needed - Joe’s Jeans, Hudson, Paige (Paige material tends to be thinner from my experience), rag & bone. Blank NYC has really cute jackets in real and faux suede and leather that pair great with jeans or pants.
For fun clothes, check out Revolve.com . Prices range from $50-600, but they have lots of fun, cute pieces, especially dresses and rompers.
Other must haves:
A good Jean jacket is a must have - mine is from Paige and I love it. Layer it over blouses, dresses, rompers, dress up leggings and a tee.
A little black dress - mine is from TOPSHOP and short sleeve. Check out revolve, TOPSHOP, Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, and go for how it fits.
Good Blazer - Nordstrom, Vince, Theory, Zara, I check all over have some high end and some bargains that look great
I really like Anthropology; and Nordstrom has stylists you can book!
For the most amazing trousers I go to J. Crew. They fit amazing. Invest in good basics first and make a pinterest board in which you can save all the styles you like. Go from there and see what's in the stores! :)
Agree on the Everlane comment. Their pants are great and I love the 2 sweater I have. Every time I buy online I have no returns.
Honestly, I’ve found some of my favorite stuff super cheap at Forever 21. I’m not sure if they still sell this style. Zara is fantastic. H&M as well! ASOS might be a great online option for you, too! Best of luck. You’re going to look & feel great and rock your new job. Congrats!
I have nothing new to add that people haven’t already said. I’m just really happy for you, genuinely. Congrats for your new beginning.
Oh, I guess I do have one thing to add. While I’m all for the new wardrobe and handbags and makeover. Don’t forget with that new paycheck to put some in stocks. Make it work for you!
Congrats! Nothing to laugh about; my story was very similar to yours. Most important: only buy what you really love. Something “eh?” “Maybe?” Put it down. Return it. Not worth your time or money.
That said, my wardrobe is a combo of high and low. I have pieces from Zara and Topshop that have lasted a decade! Topshop boots that still look as killer now as they did when I bought them. As you cultivate your sense of style, you’ll be able to shop anywhere.
Pay attention to materials and construction. Everlane and Cuyana are great for classic staples and accessories, and I love splurging on Clare V bags (woman designed and US made). Find indie designers you love (In God We Trust was one of my faves until they pandemic-pivoted), and stick with them. And as others mentioned: no need to buy designer brand new. There are so many places to buy hardly worn/used.
Don’t be afraid to tailor to get the fit you want; key for vintage and thrift shopping.
Finally: congratulations again!!
