Sometimes allies prioritize their own voice versus uplifting voices that are silenced while being quiet or supporting what’s being said and that isn’t helpful at all really :/
THIS!
I think it's great to have one person you can really trust and confide in, but allyship in the office is a whole scam. At the end of the day, all of these people are looking out for themselves and their OWN career.
Allies are important…but what’s more important IN OFFICE is having a sponsor. Sponsors are critical.
I’ve seen situations in the office where I thought allies should speak up to help but they didn’t. But when they did it was to make themselves look better… just to say they were an ally but no action was taken place. So easy to do. It’s one thing to say you agree that I have an issue but to not take action to support me is another…knowing you have the power to help change or resolve something is being an ally. I saw this with a lot of upper managers…they have diversity on the team and call themselves allies but never make the “diverse” feel included in the decision processes or access to additional roles, resources or promotions in the organization.
