There's always a lot of discussion about salary transparency, and opinions range all over. My own take is that it would create a lot of problems, and for a lot of people it would seem like an invasion of privacy. If people want to talk about their salaries, I don't care, but I consider my personal finances my own personal business.

Yeah, I’m with you 100%. It’s definitely awkward as hell at first—nobody loves talking about their exact salary, especially with coworkers you see every day. There’s that fear of jealousy, resentment, or even just straight-up discomfort. But honestly, the awkwardness is mostly on the company side because secrecy is one of their biggest advantages in negotiations.
I know that's legally required in California right now, if that helps!

Oh yeah, that's a great point—California's been ahead of the curve on this for a while now. Since 2023, employers with 15+ employees have to include the salary range in job postings (and it's just gotten tighter as of yesterday with the new amendments kicking in, making those ranges have to be a realistic "upon hire" estimate instead of some huge band). It definitely takes a lot of the mystery (and unfairness) out of the process right from the start. Applicants know what to expect, it's harder for companies to lowball certain groups, and it probably cuts down on wasted interviews where the pay doesn't align. I've noticed job listings here feel way more straightforward because of it.Do you work in California or deal with CA postings a lot? Has it changed how you approach applying or negotiating at all?
