Really grateful we are not having to explain to our students why gay marriage is up for debate again. There are rare bits of good news these days, so I woke up very relieved to hear this one!

What act are you talking about? There is no “gay marriage act”.
Are you referring the Respect for Marriage Act passed under Biden? I’m assuming so.
Why is it an American victory? I haven’t been following a case, but I wish we would ban the federal government from being involved in marriage at all. Makes no sense to me. Let states do as they choose but leave the fed to dealing with money and safety issues.
I was alive in 2015. It was absolutely informally called the gay marriage act. At least everywhere I went. No! The law was not officially called that. Look up and read about the history of gay rights.
As a conservative I am glad that they are not taking it up. Just plain asinine. So many of my friends feel the same way, not all conservatives are "against" gay marriage or anything LGBT
The Respect for Marriage Act was signed into law in December 2022. No reason to bring it up again.
Hey, as long as you don’t actively try to separate ppl, you have your believes and others have there’s. I don’t think that’s the issue. I don’t remember it being that big of a deal after that 2015 ruling. I remember the social workers who were typically assigned high school (but not always), talked about what it was like in the HS prior to 2015 and after. Awareness of gays in the general population really became evident during the aids crisis in the early 80s on.
I worked in a substance abuse clinic for adolescents and adults in the 80s. Those were crazy times.
Can you imagine how much confusion would occur if states were allowed to ban gay marriage? Couples could move from one state to another and would no longer enjoy the rights of being legally married.
Health insurance, hospital visitation rights, tax filing benefits, social security survivor benefits, inheritance rights… with all due respect, what are you talking about?

Anyone going to be teaching about this in the classroom?
It will definitely factor into my political science discussion this week. My group this semester has been doing a great job keeping up with current issues and bringing them up in class.
A few points:
He isn’t a felon. You are factually wrong.
The Constitution has not been ignored.
What law was ignored because it didn’t apply?
Just making sure that the code of conduct is being followed-rules for thee but not for me? Political topics ok as long as they are left adjacent and you agree with it. Check. It gets so confusing sometimes to keep up on the changing goal posts for what is acceptable speech in this forum.

Politics is fine if it can be clearly linked to education, which this can.
There has definitely been purely political stuff from the left removed.
How exactly is it supposed to work if a marriage is recognized in some states but not others? This is a BS position taken by people who are too cowardly to own their bigotry.
This scotus ruling in 2015 was a big deal. I clearly remember waiting for the verdict.
