Kids have a right to an education - they don't have a right to graduate . They have to earn it. Stop letting misplaced compassion kick the problem down the road. Standards are not racist.
Agree completely
Oh I have had plenty of kids failing the last several years. It never used to be that way but kids are changing. My teaching style has definitely lowered in standards and still kids don’t do anything.
The problem with kids getting Fs in middle school is that it doesn’t matter because they will still continue on to the next grade.
#brokensystem
You are absolutely correct. Students in middle school gets come to high school and think that they’re just going to be pushed along. We have a high failure rate in ninth grade math. Students don’t understand. I had a student once who failed and had to retake algebra one. The next year he found me and told me he didn’t believe that when he would have to retake the class. And he apologized for not believing me.
We need to remove the admin pressures of keeping the passing rate up for the schools. It’s a state pressure.. many teachers have been forced to give a D and nothing lower. Many students are just fine with a D grade and that’s the issue. They don’t go to classes and walk around campus due to this grading scale. This is an affluent kids grading scale not a grading scale that kids from the hood really care about. I hope I make sense. We have bigger issues if we teach in non affluent areas. Just saying.
This is true
We are not allowed to give anything lower than a 50 for Q1 & Q3. That way students have a chance the second quarter and fourth quarter to bring their grade up to passing. It does not matter if they have a five or 49. I feel like we are setting our kids up to fail because they believe that is how it works in the real world.
So true
Predicting Karma will be a you-know-what in 5-10 years for those kids who were passed along. Unless they join the family business, this isn’t how the real world works. Pay raises, promotions, even keeping a job is based on meeting or EXCEEDING standards and expectations. Showing up for work on time is the baseline and this too is not an emphasis in our schools. “#brokensystem” is right.
System is so broken
Admin cares more about how we look on the school report card, rather than if the students are actually ready for the real world. It’s infuriating. Accountability has taken a back seat to enjoying a reputation that is not actually a reality. As long as we look good and property taxes keep funding us, they will keep the status quo
Rising Star
There seems to be a lot of pressure to keep graduation rates up for sure. As others have said, its extremely difficult to try and give anyone a poor grade these days, which is sad. Of course we never want to see a child fail but sometimes it can be a motivating push for them.
