I don’t think so - but it definitely isn’t something I’d view as normal.
All it takes is for someone to complain that it makes them uncomfortable and it’ll be an issue for him. It’s up to you, but if it was me I’d at least have a conversation and ask a few questions.
You should be able to be authentic at work, but if I bring my George Forman grill and start whipping up optional breakfast sandwiches, someone is going to complain it’s a safety issue, I’m soliciting or that it makes them uncomfortable.
Basically.. it’s a grey area IMO. But if it at all moves towards people feeling obligated or compelled, it shouldn’t be happening in the office or on company time.

I think your major concerns will be if your staff thinks it’s truly voluntary. You know what I mean? Like does the GM say it’s voluntary, but the staff feels pressured to participate in order to stay on his good side?
Good question. My company does this from time to time. Its voluntary and in the 40 years weve been open not one complaint. I think it actually helps morale and the employees seem to like it- makes them feel safe.

I would be cautious. Even if voluntary, I think there are risks around inclusion and perceived pressure.
