Management and HR are, first and foremost, supposed to protect the company from liability. I always keep that in mind even if they claim to have the nicest policies, they’re still paid to protect the company and everything I tell them will be seen through the lens of corporate liability.
True
Nope. My manager went on vacation and some manager from a different store came and changed our schedules!! The person in charge told me to go to HR, ohh I wish I wouldn't have. I have found out since that it is a protected right under the Minimum Wage Act but yeah, real protected. I was demoted and fired.
Right! I honestly went in there stupidly, just asking a question. Hey, I am full time and now I'm working less than 20 hours a week? Next thing I know, they decided my "performance" was bad. I never had any verbal or written warnings, we just did our yearly reviews, and everything was great. I am going through the EEOC but that can take a year or longer, and they are fighting my unemployment. And the job market sucks right now. I deeply regret my choice.
I try to be the person who everyone can come to. Like, being the buffer between my team and the store manager, because 75% of the time it's about them.
Pro
I tell everyone that they are free to contact HR at any time, for any reason, but that HR is on the side of the company, and before they do that, they should talk to me about the situation, even if they feel that I am in the wrong. I have NEVER intentionally taken retalitory steps against anyone. But I have had people not listen to me, and reach out to contact HR, and regret it.
I also tell everyone not to be the reason for an HR required meeting or memo that everyone has to sign.
It worked in my favor, but I had substantial damning evidence to back my claim as well as a co-worker as witness.
Pro
I always feel like the open door policy doesn’t really benefit us except for certain cases. Every time I hear a story about going to HR about a problem. Either the problem is resolved and they make a change or nothing changes at all and it’s brushed to the side.
Pro
As I always remind people whenever this (or similar) topic comes up, HR is NOT on your side. They have ONE job, and that is to protect the company's best interests. If you show ANYTHING that threatens the company's best interests, you will find HR working against you.

Exactly! People forget HR’s first loyalty is to the company, not the employee. It’s easy to think they’re a safe outlet, but they’ll always see things through the lens of protecting the business.
No! The one time I had been sexually harassed in front of others, only one girl stood up for me. My manager I felt had a crush on him and was on his side. The others felt bad for him. It was a struggle to go to work every day. I was on edge because he would do things like come up behind me entirely too close and very inappropriately and my reminding him I was married and that made me uncomfortable never deterred him. Going to my manager in confidence backfired because she told the assistant and the assistant told everyone else.
