There’s someone on my team who clearly gets more access to leadership. They share similar backgrounds and personalities. It feels unfair, but relationships naturally influence opportunities. Where’s the line between favoritism and human nature?

I don’t feel like that’s an issue. Part of career growth and business is building relationships and networking. They are doing nothing wrong from my point of view. They are taking the right steps to further their career by networking with the right people.

A good leader maintains availability equally. While it is important to cultivate those relationships with the team and leaders, I would think that a truly good leader understands the value of fairness and works to ensure a level of inclusiveness for all.

Why do you think this person gets more access to leadership? Are there specific things that this person does which gets them more access? Is this person on your team at your level on the org chart/your subordinate/your superior?

It’s frustrating to be excluded and I’m sorry you’re dealing with that but perhaps this is a challenge you can break down and use to your advantage.

Favouritism is a part of human nature, and also a normal part of the corporate environment whether that's fair or not. My advice is to start playing the game as well if you want to get ahead.

If you believe they’re gaining advantages work-wise due to a personal favouritism then it’s definitely worth bringing up; however if it’s not a big deal to you it’s probably not worth the time and effort

I'm at wits end guys. After spending the past 2 years producing and learning new skills in the gaming industry. I'm completely unable to find work.
I have 8+ years of experience as a full stack web developer with a strong set of design skills having begun my career in User Experience Design. Now with the last two years I've added game production in Unity, C#, 3D modeling and animation, level design, narrative design, and asset management to my skillset. I'm unable to support myself.

So I work for a small company as a SEM/Director… which in my world just means I am really Lead Developer, Part BA and part product owner as well as reviewing the devs. I came up in this company starting at about SE3 of 5 so the position is just kind of what I made it. I have recently been getting interest from some larger companies like Amazon. Long preamble to ask, what are the day to day responsibilities/expectations of an SEM at a FAANG?

Laid off with 1 YOE. Do I include college Awards / Extracurriculars (have just one line to list each right now) ? How about SAT scores?
