I think it depends on how late they are and if this is a regular occurrence excuse. I commute 1 hour & 10 mins to work and before I’ve rocked up 30 minutes late and said it was traffic and they were fine about as they know it can happen with me being 45 mile down the road, but that has been very rare in happening.

Make sure you have plenty of time so your not rushing or stressing, hopefully your can avoid some work rush hour traffic!
I think there should be some level of grace and understanding. Traffic and accidents happen. If an employee is late multiple times a week, it's a problem. But showing up 15 minutes late because of a bad storm isn't something that I think is worth penalizing.
If they're normally good at time keeping they should definitely be understanding. These things happen.
I think it depends on various things. If it is someone who is always late, they will use any excuse. If it is someone who is always on time, I would be flexible.
Some people will always have an excuse, you are so right.
I think employers should show some flexibility in bad weather. You can plan ahead, but sometimes flooding, accidents, or cancelled trains are out of your control. Being rigid about start times in those situations feels unreasonable.
Everyone is only human, management come in when they please. Sometimes we get held up but it's out of our control.
I think flexibility is key especially when weather creates unsafe or unpredictable conditions. Employers should trust their teams to communicate and adjust when needed. Being on time is ideal, but safety comes first.
When you trust your staff if can make them feel more motivated to be on time or strive to succeed.
