This is my first time posting here, so I hope I'm doing this right. After 10 years of teaching, I've made the difficult decision that I won't be back next year, and I'm not sure the best time to resign. Should I do it at the reappointment meeting about a month out, or wait until the last teacher work day? I'm worried that waiting looks bad, but resigning early means a month of coworker questions. Any advice on the timing?

I think a lot depends on your district and your feelings towards your district! I adore my school, but my commute is long. I know once I start a family I’ll have to make a change to somewhere a bit closer to home. I personally would choose to let my district know as early as possible so they could get a jumpstart on posting my position internally, then posting it publicly if no one applied in district. We like to have interview candidates complete a demo lesson and as much as I HATE doing a demo lesson myself as someone being interviewed it really tells you a lot about a teacher and how they navigate the classroom. I wouldn’t want to leave my district in a bind with that - it’s hard to get a demo lesson in over the summer during summer school!

On the flip side - my first district was awful and they treated me like the scum on the bottom of someone’s shoe. I told them the last day of school I wouldn’t be back - part of me wishes I had waited until the day before school started.

For me - I was staying in education so I didn’t want to burn a single bridge despite my feelings towards my first district. It’s a hard choice, good luck with your new adventures!

I think you’ve earned the right to choose whatever gives you the least stress. If the reappointment meeting is the most professional moment to share, go for it. But if you want to quietly finish strong and avoid the emotional weight of the "what’s next" convos, I’d wait.

Resigning now doesn't mean you have to tell everyone your plans. If you know now that you aren't returning for sure, then tell your admin.

You can tell HR anything you want - if you want to resign early so they are prepared to rehire (which is how I would phrase it, like you're doing them a favor, working as a "team" with the DO) then it might look good on you to do that.

You can select your "regination date" as the last of the fiscal year. Ours is the end of June - I think most districts are.

You might want to do some research on health insurance before you put in notice. I had a colleague who decided to wait to resign so her COBRA would cover her and her disabled husband for longer. If insurance isn’t an issue, the sooner the better for your site to be able to hire a quality replacement. Best of luck to you!

I personally would wait to the last day. This way, you won’t be treated differently until then.

I met someone in the new city I moved to but they work for Fox News. They are a good person but I can’t get over their employer and they said I was immature for that. Are all companies under the wrath of capitalism so I should overlook that? Or has Fox brought too much hate to the gay community to even consider a relationship while he works for them. Thoughts?

Interested in joining the Reserves, but I’m guessing that’s way too much with a consulting career? No ROTC or previous military experience so I’d have to go through OCS/OTS as well.
Or is it better to wait until I exit to industry and pursue my interest in the military then?
Any and all advice appreciated.
