This week I have checked the news more than I probably should. Every update seems to change how I feel about making a move. One minute I feel confident, next minute I hesitate. How do you stop the news from influencing decisions?

I've always paid a lot of attention to the news, and lately that's not the best habit to have. You can't help but feel real anxiety. Of course, it doesn't matter if you ignore the news, what's happening globally are going to affect us anyway. The news is making me more cautious with spending and investing. Not a bad time to be content with cash.

I get this. I think awareness is good, but too much just creates anxiety without clarity. I try to separate what actually affects my decisions versus what just makes me feel uncertain.

I don't really read the news, to be honest. I know that's probably bad, but there is just so much out there I can't control. Why stress myself out about it?

I do not think it is bad. I think it is intentional. If it is not actionable, I do not see the value in carrying that stress daily.

I've stopped paying attention. None of it has any direct impact on me, and there is nothing I can do to change things. Obsessing over what's going on will only bring me down. No point to it.

I agree to a point, but I would not fully switch off. I think ignoring everything can leave you unprepared. I try to stay informed, just not consumed by it.

About a year ago, I decided to completely disconnect with anything that fed me politics and “news”. Best thing I’ve done for myself and my family.

No more message boards. No engagement online. No social media other than LinkedIn. No following of local, national, or global news. No watching the news on tv in the house.

When I was engaged with those things, it was like voluntarily doubling down on hearing about stuff that made me anxious or frustrated or angry, because I was going to hear about most of it indirectly anyways.

Just by existing, I know what’s going on in the world. No need to deep dive into a toxic environment and topics by voluntarily engaging.

The other thing is, I don’t have a single iota of control over anything that’s on the news. I don’t care about what’s happening 30 miles from me, let alone across the world.

I focus on my family and immediate community. The rest is going to happen whether I engage in the rage fest or not. So I put my energy elsewhere.

My parent’s friends are spending the majority of the rest of their days in an angry, defeated state of mind because they turn on the news the second they wake up and leave it on all day long. They are willingly allowing huge corporations and the political elite to ruin their lives. They are addicted to being angry and they look like addicts.

No thanks. Not interested. If anyone tries to engage me in political discussions, I find something else to do right away.
