I once had a summer gig where I did very little and got paid very well. And professionally I felt guilty for it. My supervisor, also a summer hire, noticed my frustration, but told me that if I wasn’t there earning the money, then somebody else would gladly take the job. So my take on data centers and solar farms is in that vein - somebody is going to build it regardless and that community will see the positive economic impact. So why shouldn’t mine be the one to benefit?
Not at all.
Personally, I do not want a data center near me and I know no one who supports it. But data centers are already being built in Michigan and in lots of other states too. In fact something like 37/38 days centers have been built or are being built in Detroit alone; 70 in the state at large
There are some communities in Michigan that are really fighting tooth and nail against it and are winning so far. The fight is not over though. There’s other areas in Michigan that signed the dotted line right away. I’ve read that utilities are much higher due to these data centers. In fact, there is a big debate whether the community or the data center should front the bill for the increase in utilities bill. So far it’s the residents that pay.
