Hi There, I am a finance and analytics professional with ~7 years of experience in domains like FP&A, OTC, Process transformation and Healthcare analytics. We do a retro after every sprint and simple use a google doc. It’s a table split into 4 quadrants: what did we do well, what we could have done better, next steps, and things that are still unclear. We spend the first 5-10 minutes individually adding bullet points (with our names) to each quadrant and voting before discussing.
So many free tools available, shouldn’t be the problem. If all fails you can even ask everyon to write their stuff on a paprr an hold in front of the camera.
Red flag though: Product manager facilitating retrospectives.
- either you are a PO that is also taking over the role of a scrum master.
- or you are a micro manage product manager.
Role of the SM is to facilitate the scrum process and retro. The PO is available during the retro but def not leading it. Conflict of interest. A PM has nothing to do with the sprint. (In General)
Agree it’s a red flag. Accepted a PM role and am acting more as SM, BA, project/program manager.
I've used Trello in the past. Each column for what worked well, what needed improvement, action items. We created new columns for each review.
We use Mural for this and it works out pretty well!
We had a trial of Mural and everyone loved it but it never got approved and all access was taken away. 😭

We started leveraging parabol.co which has been really nice so far. It was on recc from one of the engineers.
Should’ve been more clear - I’m at a highly regulated company that restricts what software we’re allowed to use. Hopefully Miro will be available eventually, but it’s already been delayed nearly a year as it goes through legal reviews. Is there a way to run a retrospective without collaborative tools? (Eg just using PowerPoint or Word?)
Yeah retros should be simple. What worked, what didn’t, what you can improve on/how. What gaps can you investigate to resolve on later.
In theory a word doc could do it but just not pretty.
We use reetro.io, I think it’s free! Our retros have been extremely productive
we fill it out before the meeting then go over everyone’s submissions
