Can you really learn a language properly with Duolingo? To the point in being able to use it professionally? I feel like it's no rival to Rosetta Stone in that regard.

I'm a polyglot, and I find Duolingo is good for practicing vocabulary but in terms of acquiring the grammar, syntax, and spoken nuance of a language, it's just not effective.

Not Chinese.

No, nor can Rosetta Stone for you unless you are using the features to communicate with native speakers; most language learning is patching together multiple offerings - DuoLingo is great for vocab, but then you need to actually practice writing paragraphs to improve writing, go have conversations every week with a native speaker, etc to get to a professional level. I haven’t looked at DuoLingo and maybe they added more features to connect you with native speakers

I have been in my current role/company (industry) for 3 months. Prior to this job, I was at consulting firm for 3 months. I definitely don’t want to stay in my current job either long term. But how long should one stay at a company? I have 4 years experience in consulting. In the future I’d like to pivot to higher education but I don’t think 2 back to back short term jobs look good on a resume.

Just a reminder to invest consistently. My gross salary for 2021 will be $85k and my gross bonus is $0. I’ve already increased my NW by more than my gross salary and we’re only halfway through.

Have you ever lied in an interview? If so, to what extent?

when is it safe to give your 2 weeks? I just signed my offer and filled out the background check info. My start date is 3/29. Is it safe to think this position is secured and I can submit my two weeks tomorrow?

INDUSTRY in pdx, CW and account roles

Hi fishes, I am working as analyst in kgs consulting team with total 5 years of exp. I have got an offer letter from accenture with 10lpa + variable. The role is of senior analyst in technology side. My current compensation is 6.5 and manager ia saying that they will promote and increse my salary. What should i do? Please suggest.

Became a senior and got a 3.5% raise. All I can do is laugh..

If I gave a salary range in my pre-screen and then got an offer in that range, can I negotiate higher? They said 70-80k. I said I’m look for something higher (more in the 90-100k) and they said that should be doable, but really I want something in the 110-120k range (gave a lowball bc didn’t want to turn them off in the first round). How do I got about asking for higher?

Up for consideration for internal Director role. Currently at very high end of AS (115k). How much should I ask for and how much should I take? I’m thinking 150 ask and 130 settle.

Hey Fishes- So my parents got B2 Visa on March 2020 to come for my graduation in May. But due to covid, they couldn’t travel. The visa has duration of 5 years. I heard somewhere that if you don’t travel within 1 year of obtaining visa, you can’t use the remaining visa? Is that true?

Any advice?: Just finished long term W2 freelance role (since Jan) + I also have a small 1099 side project that‘ll be finishing up in 2ish wks. If we are talking >10k on 1099 (i.e. not enough to justify filing for SCorp) + <160-200k on W2 — is there any real tax advantage of opening LLC vs paying me directly outside of the “protects personal assets if ever sued”, etc? Technically I *could* open LLC quickly b4 invoicing- but dunno if worth $ to do so for such small amount of 1099 coming in?
