You have to have the time and resources for the training and preparation. I see what you are saying, but it’s such a different scenario. Plus, they only have one chance to show what all that time and effort did. I can’t even imagine performing under those conditions.
That's a great point. The pressure would be immense. I have stressful things I need to do as part of my job but probably nothing that crazy
Would you want to? My cousin is a professional cyclist. It's an all-consuming life, but it's something he loves, and something that is setting his family up for the rest of their lives, even if they have to go without him for most of the year. Would the outcome be the same in your career?
Definitely some thought provoking ideas. Would I want to? Probably not, unless I enjoyed it enough. And no I don't think its a realistic outcome for my career unless I poured a lot more effort into it.

I think it can make a big difference if you can apply the same effort
Applying the effort is the trick I guess! It's so hard and I feel like I'm constantly trying to battle sleep deprivation from kids, illness, other stress, etc.

Yep, the only thing getting in the way of physical training is oneself... but at my career I've been blocked so many times by politics.
