We have a new person at work who is gay. She was showing a picture of her dog in the intro and just said “my wife and I are trying to take more road trips so here’s a pic of my dog in her new car booster seat.” My colleague pulled me aside and said it was so brave of her to talk about her sexuality. Aren’t we beyond that? Can’t people just live their lives without us caring?

Would you have felt differently if she said it was her husband or significant other? I would be annoyed by your colleague thinking you should give her brownie points for telling everyone that she's gay. Personally, I would rather know that someone is wearing their sexuality as a badge of honor so that I can avoid them. I stay away from manipulative people. I have had gay friends and family members and none of them are expected a pat on the back for being openly gay.

MAS I think you are reading too deeply into my response and my interpretation of OPs post. Nothing was directed towards you personally. There are folk who want a trophy or preferential treatment for things that are not "special", often for attention. In this case OP confirmed this was not the case in this instance.

OP: We should be beyond the idea that someone is brave for acknowledging certain marginalized parts of themselves. It should be no different than a straight person acknowledging their spouse similarly. But, the fact remains that the current climate shows waning acceptance for the LGBT community. It really is brave to just put it out there.

I disagree. I don't view it as brave. Just comfortable with who she is. The oddity is the colleague who felt the need to draw attention to it.

I think there are 3 people in this scenario! OP, the new person (who is gay) and a third person that told OP that the new person is brave.
I don't think the new person bragged about it. Am I right, OP?

I once had a manager say “I didn’t know ___ was gay!” in a shocked but seemingly innocent (as in just genuinely shocked way). I told him yes? I didn’t get why it was a needed to question lol

What’s the best way to turn down a 2nd interview? During the 1st interview, I learned that the compensation for the role is not within the range that I am looking for and requires 400 more billable hours a year than what I bill now. I’d basically be laterally for my current salary just to bill 400 more hours. I also wasn’t aware that the local office was strictly ID. Firm website advertises lots of practice areas. Any advice? TIA!

I’m my partners only associate and I went on parental leave two weeks ago. I feel horrible for leaving him to handle our cases alone, but am trying to focus on my wife and new baby. That being said, should I still offer to handle minor matters that come in to ease the workload off my boss? He’s been super cool during my entire leave, so I don’t feel pressured to one bit.
