Three tardies = 1 absence. 5 absences results in loss of credit. Tardies also result in lunch detention. We had a serious problem with a large group of kids just hanging out in the halls and sauntering to class 7 or 8 minutes late every day. We’ve really cracked down.

Our new dean has done away with lunch detention assigned by student services. Teachers can assign them, but they also have to work the lunch detention they assign
We have no bells in our building, and my room is on a different floor than most of the kids' classes for my grade. So tardiness can be a big thing.
I do an attendance question every day which is usually based on a cool under-a-minute video. I only show the video once (unless one of the teachers before me let out late and a lot of kids are late and it's not their fault). They don't like to miss the video. Especially since they usually get to render an opinion. They love to have an opinion.
If it's still a problem, lunch detention for repeated issues. But that's rare.
