Not mentioning it to your boss isn’t lying about it.

“No bonuses this year sucks”
Yeah, that does suck
Is not a lie

Get on his/her good graces: buy them a gift with your gift card

I was joking. In either case, it depends on the comfortability you have with your boss. Perhaps the amount on the gift card won’t even sway his opinion one way or another

Do not mention it to anyone, including your boss. You were specifically told this by your Director. And the “gift card” really is not the same as the “bonus”. Keep your confidences. And don’t do anything crazy like buy your boss a gift out of the blue.
This is such an F’ed up thing to do from a company culture stand point. Destroys trust.

I would strongly advise not doing this
This is such an odd situation you’re in...why gift cards?
I think a gift card and a typical bonus may be in two very different arenas. I don’t know how things are structured where you are but if you got a $100 gift card, that’s very different than a $5k+ whatever range bonus your manager might be used to. It’s probably easier to try and retain you if you are at will with no contractual agreement versus a manager who has an agreement and will need to suck it up because times are tight. There’s different ways of retaining people at different levels, and maybe a gift card was the decision for your level. Again, without knowing specifics, I don’t think you have one up on your manager and they are probably trying to show their appreciation since you said you’re higher performer. Just keep it to yourself.
How much was this gift card? The amount matters a lot.
