What are your ESG goals or DEI goals? Those usually advise on the best ERG to start.
Do you have a DEI committee? It usually better to start that before begin an ERG.
There’s a company called Chezie they have great resources for all things ERGs (I don’t work for them but I love their free resources)
What ERG would align the most with achieving those close should be the 1st ERG you start IMO
Ask the employees. The biggest misstep with ERGs is the company or a small group pushing for them. Do a simple anonymous form and ask folx. Even if the leadership wants ERGs you need folx to step up and lead them and the company should be prepared to compensate ERG leaders for the extra work. :)
I find that when you leave it up to the employees you get better participation. Perhaps set up budgets, leadership stipends, handbooks and guidelines on how to start it and then whomever wants to start one will. When it comes from the top it's harder to keep it going without someone really willing to drive the day to day.
