Well, I guess I am hungry or something...but I wanted to share with you something that our school implemented this year. Each team is assigned two days a week to eat with the kids. Our team eats with the 6th Graders. It is amazing to watch the students and staff putting their phones away and eating lunch together. Some of the kids look forward to having those moments with staff. I love sharing dad jokes, and the kids have learned that. My lunch time with them is never boring!

So you have no “off duty “ lunch two days a week? While you may enjoy this time with the kids, this is illegal. Is this time replaced at another time during the day? They can only do this if you volunteer or are paid. It can’t be a “you have to do” kind of thing.

I am in Specials/Related Arts. So when we have Team and Personal Plans and lunch the students are at their lunchtime, and in their Core classes.

This is so good! I would always have one on one or small group rewards to have lunch with me in my room. Since I did it by choice it wasn't illegal.

I love it. I always open my door to students during recess/lunch. I work while they eat. I listen while they talk lol. It's always interesting.

Yes, I too have enjoyed having kids in my room during lunch sometimes, but (for MI/Reading specialist) you voluntarily had kids there. It wasn’t directed. I’m not saying having kids in your room during lunch is a bad thing, but it was your choice. Having a teacher directed to “give up their lunch” is illegal. Schools can only do this if they replace lunch during another lunch period or it’s paid. Look at your contract. It clearly states this is “off duty” time. If a teacher is willing to do this for pay or compensation time then that’s great. My only concern here is the precedent you are setting for others teachers who don’t want to give up their designated lunch time. I have no problem doing this when I want to, but not when it’s directed by admin, and not for free when they direct this.

Our entire teaching staff does this two days a week. On those days, we do not have a team planning period. I guess that is the way we do because our team plan is switched with our lunch period on those days. I hope that makes sense. Some teachers are not doing it both days of the week
