I think a lot of us have been scarred over the years. In my experience, we rarely are given the opportunity to infuse creativity of our own and have to follow the direction of someone else with an entirely different vision. It's like telling a cook at a restaurant that you don't eat meat, vegetables, carbs, or dairy and then asking them to surprise you with their best meal.
If we want to survive what is coming and indeed what is already here then we must change our mindsets. We have to organize, unionize and stop giving our services away.
I think you answered your own question without realizing it. We've all been conditioned to do things according to a set of guidelines that leave little room for creativity and innovation. Once you've grown accustomed to that, it's really hard to snap out of it. There's no desire to think outside the box or push the envelope because you know you'll inevitably be asked for revisions. It's incredibly stifling.
And it’s by design to keep us controlled tools.

I’d argue that thinking within the box and adhering to constraints makes you a better designer.
Real world stuff: time, budget, following client brief.
You make it sound like being restricted is a bad thing.
Unless you have infinite time, budget, and a client who doesnt care, the mark of being creative is solving the problems given the “obstacles” you have.
If that’s true then why is everything being produced today reruns and cliché?
Subject Expert
I feel like because those are all subjective things so it means different things to different leaders or stakeholders and it becomes really hard to sell your designs if that's all you can go off. If you have data that can back it up or prove how your out of the box design can still fit within the system of the company then that makes it more appealing for any stakeholders and gives them a reason to take a risk
